1st Grade – Kookaburra Cup Grand Final Recap
Broadbeach Robina claimed back-to-back glory in the Kookaburra Cup with a superb 42-run win over Southport Labrador in another hard-fought Grand Final.
Batting first, Broady built their way to 9/214 from 75 overs, thanks largely to a brilliant knock from Nathan Stains (93), who stood tall under pressure and anchored the innings. He was supported by Alex Smeeth (30), Sean Fitzsimmons (24), and David Lund (20), who all made handy contributions. Late runs from Grant Edwards (9)* and Shane Davis (11)* pushed the total past 200, giving the Cats a strong platform.
In reply, Southport Labrador looked threatening at times but were eventually bowled out for 172 in 71.3 overs. Broadbeach’s bowlers showed discipline and patience, with Grant Edwards (5/63 from 23 overs) delivering a match-winning spell. Nathan Stains (3/43 from 22.3 overs) capped off a brilliant all-round performance, while the attack worked in partnerships to keep the pressure on throughout the innings.
It was a true team performance — led by Stains’ near-century with the bat and Edwards’ five-wicket haul with the ball — that sealed a 42-run victory and crowned Broadbeach Robina as 1st Grade Kookaburra Cup Premiers once again.
